Bella, the main character is the one telling the story from her viewpoint. Bella is experiencing an internal dilemma. She doesn't want to go live with her dad, but, at the same time, she wants her mom to be happy. Bella is obviously an unselfish person, as she chooses to move in with her dad. She moves from Phoenix, Arizona, one of the sunniest places in the US to Forks, Washington, one of the dreariest places in the US. She's unhappy but tries not to let Charlie, her dad, see this. She nervously starts school and is very shy when a lot of attention is drawn to her.

Title: Martin Luther King article
By: worldnews.com
Dr. Martin Luther King is trying to get the government to stop spending so much money on wars and such. Then, the government would be able to provide help to the underclass and poor. I believe the same high dollar war spending is still in effect today.
Awesome Job! Thanks (anne)

Bella awakes the next day and gets ready for school. She's very excited to return to school because she is eager to see Edward. When she arrives at school she gets out of her truck to encounter a van sliding across the parking lot right towards her. It was in an instant Edward appeared, knocking her out of the way to stop the van from hitting her. Bella had bumped her head against the concrete. Bella is very observant during this composition, noticing everything Edward does, from stopping the van to picking its' side up off of the ground. She knows for a surety that Edward has extraordinary abilities but, at the same time, has an internal dilemma because it should be impossible. She's brave because she confronts Edward about what she saw, when many people would not do this.
One of the appeals to the character Bella was her strength. It frustrates me when I read books where the female characters are portrayed as "damsels in distress", the same for movies or TV shows. Great job on your summaries. (anne)

She awakes to find him in her chair. He comments that she’s not usually this confused in the morning. Her confusion is due to her awareness of Edward and her worrying over her morning appearance and breath. They plan to spend the day together and to introduce Bella to his family. This will be the first time she's formally introduced to his family. Edward is more amazed by her as the time passes. She is neverous about meeting his family, curious to know what they will think of her and the circumstances surrounding their relationship. Edward recognizes her bravery in this because she's really, truly not frightened about meeting a house full of vampires but is really worried about what they will think of her. When Edward returns to pick Bella up, he kisses her, causing her to stop breathing and pass out. Carlisle and Esme are very pleased to meet Bella, happy that Edward has finally found someone. They thought that he might have been changed too young to really be interested in this type of relationship, that some vital part of his genetic makeup may be missing. Alice is very exuberant about meeting Bella. Jasper keeps his distant at Edward's warning since he's the newest member of the Cullen family to join the "vegetarian" lifestyle. Rosalie and Emmett are nowhere to be found; Bella knows this is due to Rosalie's dislike of her. Edward is too kind, however, to really come right out and say this. Bella is one again very observant, noticing an almost "too quick for the human eye" communication between Carlisle, Esme and Edward. As Edward and Bella approaches her house in her truck, they notice a black car parked in the drive. Bella hears Edward murmur something under his breath. Edward, being able to read minds, tells Bella that Billy Black, Jacob’s father came to warn Charlie about her spending too much time with Edward and the Cullen family. Billy does not like the Cullen family and wishes they would leave Forks altogether. Bella and Edward both decide it would be best for Bella to deal with the situation alone so that it doesn’t get out of control. Edward tells her to get them inside so that he can quickly disappear on foot. Billy gives Bella a look of warning, not at all in a friendly manner. Billy used his bringing some fish over as an excuse, for Jacob still doesn’t believe in his tribes history and old legends. Billy comes up with an excuse to send Jacob on a wild goose chase, having him search for a picture in the car when Billy, himself, knows full well that it isn’t even in there. He does this so that he can talk to Bella alone. Bella doesn’t back down, to both her surprise and Billy’s when he begins slinging accusations her way. She is actually more informed even than Billy himself about the Cullen family and she lets Billy know this with some not so subtle hints. His is actually very surprised of her knowledge and especially that she’s still hanging around with Edward after knowing so much. After some persuading, Bella convinces Billy that it’s really none of his business to tell Charlie anything. He agrees more easily than Bella expects because he really doesn’t want to have another falling out with Charlie over the Cullen family again. Billy reluctantly leaves. Bella takes a moment at the door to recompose herself and to calm her irritation from her recent confrontation with Billy just now. She wants to forget about it and focus on the more immediate situation at hand, which is that she has to prepare to tell her dad she has a boyfriend. She concedes that’s not really the right word to describe their relationship; however, this is the best way to describe it to Charlie. The less he knows the better for him and his safety. She becomes terrified, basically just nervous about having to tell her dad. Jasper, with his ability to control moods, had reined in her nervousness before, making her feel a sense of calm, but now that she was out of his presence there was little to calm her lively nerves. She gave little thought about what to wear and just threw on some old jeans and a flannel shirt. Jessica calls Bella to tell her about the dance the night before. Bella feigns boredom, telling Jessica that she just did some studying, laundry and grocery shopping the day before. Jessica does notice that Bella is distracted because she had to repeat that she and Mike kissed twice before Bella commented. Bella hurriedly gets off of the phone as she hears Charlie banging around in the garage. She tries to nonchalantly tell Charlie that she spent the day at the Cullen’s home, proceeding to inform her father she has a date with Edward beginning in a short while. He’s surprised but doesn’t overreact. Apparently, she worked herself up into a bundle of nerves unnecessarily where Charlie was concerned. Edward arrives to pick Bella up and meets Charlie. They talk about Bella as if she’s not even in the room. She tries to cut their conversation short, telling Charlie that they really must get going to meet his family for a game of baseball. Charlie finds it ironic that’s Bella is so interested in playing baseball with Edward’s family because of her clumsiness. He realizes that she must really be into Edward to agree to be subjected to this type of punishment. As she walks out onto the porch, she’s worried about how she will climb into the monstrous jeep. Edward easily lifts her into her seat with one hand and then helps buckle her in, as it’s not a normal seatbelt but, rather, a harness type of protection. They drive as far as they can and he insists they must walk the rest of the way. He says that he will carry her on his back as he runs through the woods. She’s really worried about hitting the trees. He tries to show her how safe she’ll be and that he would never put her in danger. He kisses her, and Bella, once again, becomes overly excited during their kiss. He has to push away. She can tell he’s upset and feels that it’s at her. She’s also mad and begins stomping off in the wrong direction. He stops her and convinces her to climb onto his back. When they stop she falls onto her bottom; Edward finds this hysterical, Bella not so much.

To Bella’s surprise, she didn’t get sick from flying through the woods on Edward’s back. It’s evident that Bella is upset, and Edward proceeds to find out why. To his utter surprise Bella thinks he was mad at her about the kiss when, in fact, it is himself that he’s put out with. Finding this out, Bella recalls other times he seemed to be in a “black mood”. She had always interpreted his bad moods as frustration at her being weak, slow in her unruly human reactions to situations. This touches Bella deep inside; she’s doesn’t want him to feel this way about himself, for she finds him beautiful in every way. He thinks he a bad person for putting her in constant danger, not recognizing the good in himself as Bella does. Edward tells Bella he loves her for the first time. Even though she knew this, it was still very moving to actually hear him speak the words aloud. They traveled on foot to the nearby, enormous opening in the Olympic peaks. She was amazed at how far away the bases were set from one another. Soon, Bella discovered the reason they had to wait until a thunderstorm to play baseball. She was so overcome with Edward’s grace and power that it took her breath away, for she had never quite seen him in this state before. Since Esme is referring Bella and she have the chance to talk and learn more about one another. When learning about how Esme became a vampire, Bella learns more of Edward’s generosity towards everyone. The game went on with the score constantly changing. It was difficult at times to keep up, as the game went by with inhuman speed. Suddenly, Edward is by Bella’s side with a look of fright on his face. Their baseball game caused the visitors to change course; they were coming to see the Cullen’s. Edward didn’t have time to get Bella away before they were set to appear. Rosalie’s anger towards Bella over putting her family in danger is apparent. Edward instructs Bella to remain very still and quit and to stay behind him. The Cullens, upon Carlisle suggestion not to look suspicious played in the infield, so they would be able to get to Bella and Edward’s side quickly. Edward had swapped places with Esme as referee, as he wouldn’t leave Bella’s side for an instance. He apologizes to Bella for putting her in harms way, once again. He’s very angry with himself.

The game progressed with no one showing any interest, for they were all alerted to what was going to emerge from the woods nearby. Edward pretended to show no interest in the game as his senses were attuned to the nearby forest. He profusely apologizes to Bella for bringing this kind of danger upon her. Bella tense when Edward stops breathing and angles himself protectively in front of her. Three vampires slowly emerged into the large clearly, curiously to see what the Cullen clan was doing. They were intrigued and wanted to join the game of baseball. Carlisle remains very calm so as not to arouse any suspicions from these three nomad visitors. He suggest they do join in the game as he informs them that some of his family are leaving; he includes Bella and Edward in this bunch obviously and Emmett and Alice to offer their protection. The wind blows Bella scent towards the three vampires, and the one named James is overwhelmed by her scent and wants to kill her. Title: Twilight Pages: 384 – 404
Bella came up with an idea to try and mislead James, the tracker nomad vampire. He would automatically assume Edward would never leave her side, especially after Edward’s protective showing over Bella in the clearing. Bella suggested that Alice and Jasper take her to Phoenix. The tracker wouldn’t think they would go where they say they would go. Edward and Carlisle would lead the tracker away from Forks. Esme and Rosalie would stay behind and make sure Charlie was safe. Edward wasn’t fond of the idea, but after assimilating the situation a bit more calmly than his initial reaction he realized it was their best option to catch the tracker. They drove back to her house and gave Bella a few short moments to pack her bags and come up with a way to convince Charlie not to follow. Bella says some very hurtful things to Charlie to get him to let her go freely. They drive back to the Cullen house and find Laurent, one of the nomad vampires there. He has come to warn them not to underestimate James nor Victoria, his mate because they are both lethal. Edward and Bella say their goodbyes. Bella notes that this goodbye kiss is different, like maybe it’s a goodbye in case something goes wrong. Jasper used his special mood to try and keep Bella feeling calm, but she fights it thinking that she’s not worth anyone getting hurt – not her human family nor her new-found vampire family. Jasper tells her that she is very much worth it. After asking Bella’s permission, Alice scoops her into her stone cold arms and races out the door to the car they’ll be using to drive to Phoenix in.

Title: Twilight Pages: 405 - 412
Bella awakes from a long sleep in the middle of the night, and she is disoriented. Her mind was obviously trying to protect itself as she had lived a nightmare recently. Her surrounding gave way to where she was being housed, a hotel room. After much concentration she remembers the whole episode, crying into Alice's shirt and forcing herself to remain awake so she wouldn't see the awful things that were never far from her mind. She constantly though of Charlie's broken expression, Edward's brutal snarl with teeth bared, Rosalie's resentful glare, the keen-eyed scrutiny of the tracker and the dead look in Edward's eye after their goodbye kiss (pg. 406). She remembers being awake when they arrived in Phoenix, having to inform Jasper, who was driving, the way to the airport. The plan was to stay near the airport in case they had to make a hasty retreat. The last thing Bella remembers before totally loosing conciousness is leaving the car once they were at the hotel, though she was very dependent for Alice to help keep her upright at this point. Bella is overly anxious to hear from Edward or Carlisle, and Alice and Jasper try to reassure her the reason for their not calling in yet is because there's nothing new to report. Jasper, once, misreads Bella's worry thinking it's for herself when she's in fact very worried about the Cullen's and the dangers that her presence is causing for them. This shows just how selfless Bella really is. Having to remain secured in the hotel room made the day drag by. Bella was amazed at how calm and still Alice and Jasper could be when all she could seem to do was fidget. Finally Bella begins to memorize different aspects of the room, such as the stripped pattern of the couches, to keep her brain occupied. Her mind was unlike a vampire's, for a vampire could concentrate on many things at once whereas a human is much more easily distracted. Alice constantly follows Bella around the room, making Bella wonder just what type of instructions Edward gave to Alice where she was concerned.

Bella is concerned that they haven’t heard from Carlisle or Edward yet. She makes Alice promise to tell her if something is wrong no matter how serious it is. Bella believes that Alice when she tells her that she will always tell her the truth. Bella convinces Alice to tell her how one can become a vampire. Alice informs Bella of the mechanics behind the change; this is all she can do as she recalls nothing of the change herself. Bella is caught up in a train of thoughts by what Alice tells her. Bella really wants to become a vampire to be with Edward. She believes they are truly good or she wouldn’t be with Edward nor would she be so comfortable around his family. Bella sees the good in people even when they, themselves, may not. Alice has a vision, showing James, the nomad, tracker vampire in a mirrored room. Alice phones Carlisle to inform him they will be eluded by James. They discover he has already eluded them. Bella gets the chance to speak to Edward and feels much better, mentally and physically. After studying Alice’s drawing of the mirrored room, Bella determines that it very much resembles her old dance studio.

Bella convinces Alice and Jasper to let her phone her mother, to try to keep her from coming home. Bella is worried that James will trace them with Victoria’s help since her school records would be so easy to get a hold of. Bella is the only one that considers this possibility but chooses to keep these thoughts to herself. Bella becomes anxious when her mother’s phone goes to voicemail, but leaves her a vague message, hoping she’ll get the message and return her call very soon. Bella tries to distract herself with endless boring activities; munching on old food, watching the news, trying to keep her mind occupied. She finds Alice and Jasper to be in a much more calm state than she is in. Bella sleeps for awhile, awaking to Alice and Jasper entranced by another of Alice’s drawings. She sees the mirrored room again, this time with a VCR; it’s also daylight. Alice had another vision, drawing it out on paper. Bella interrupts her to inform her where the phone should go. Both Jasper and Alice look to Bella with questioning eyes. Bella tells them that it’s her mother’s home she has seen. She feels like she might be able to hold herself together when Alice tells her Edward is coming for her.

Title: Twilight Pages: 425 – 429
Bella becomes almost hysterical even though she’s warmed inside by the fact that Edward is coming for her. Alice and Jasper are to protect her mother and Esme and Rosalie her father. Her nerves are about to unravel at the seams, how long can this endless game go on. It’s just that; endless, until James gets what he wants. Bella is frustrated and slams the door to her room, indicating to her babysitters that she wants to be left alone for the time being. They receive a phone call from Edward, finding out what time to meet them at the airport. Shortly after this phone call, Bella’s phone rings. It’s her mother’s home phone number. Alice gives the phone to Bella. Bella hears panic in her mother’s voice and tries to sooth her. Not being interrupted by her mother was unusual. Bella pauses and is sent into a whirlwind of emotions, for it was James on the other end of the line. He had her mother. She feels her voice struggling to keep a sense of calm about it. Luck for her, Jasper was out of the room; Bella fears he would have picked up on her panic. She repeats after James, just as he tells her to, in hopes that he will keep his promise not to harm her mother. She listens as he instructed her to go to her mom’s house and call him; he would then tell her where to meet him. She didn’t argue with him, but she knew fate would take her to the dreadful.

Bella prays that beating Edward will be enough to satisfy James in his deadly game of cat and mouse. Her mind was made up that she would do everything in her power to try and save her mother. She was grateful Jasper was still away from the room but knew she had to quickly pull herself together before he returned. Bella began to plan in order to keep her mind occupied so as not to alert Jasper that anything was out of the ordinary. Bella writes a goodbye letter to Edward. She will ask Alice to give it to her mother since she didn’t know when she would be able to see her again. Bella says her private goodbyes to Edward as she is writing him the goodbye letter. She could easily break, knowing she will not even get once last glance at Edward; her memories would have to do. She quickly pulls herself together so as not to mess up her inventive plan.

Title: Twilight Pages: 433 – 440
Time seemed be to passing slowly for Bella. She was afraid to be in the same room with Alice and Jasper, afraid they may finally attribute the change in Alice’s vision to the decision she made. Bella knew Alice had seen her in the mirrored room with James. They knew they were going to fail but couldn’t bring themselves to tell Bella of the awful fate that awaited her. Bella knew that they would try everything in their power to try and change the dreadful outcome, to figure out what they were doing wrong. Bella felt sick for betraying them but it was just something that must be done. At the airport, Bella anticipates the perfect moment to plan her escape. Once she eludes Jasper, she’s on the run, full force, making her escape, hoping beyond hope that she will be fast enough to get away from them. She feels better once she’s safely inside the shuttle and it’s pulling away from the airport. Bella, knowing she can’t be at all hasty in her plans, feels that fate, for once, is still on her side. She’s able to secure a taxi ride as soon as she exits the shuttle. She prepays the taxi-cab driver, as she is still able to somehow recognize that he seems suspicious of her, even as she’s dealing with all of this other stuff. It’s amazing the way Bella is able to execute her plans, remaining as focused as she does even when she knows that what’s awaiting her is going to be very unpleasant.

Title: Twilight Pages: 440 - 445
Trying to remain in a seemingly state of calm, at least for the taxi drivers’ benefit, she lets herself drift into a brief reverie. She imagines that she did remain at the airport to meet Edward and how sweet their reunion would have been. She pictures where they would have gone, though it wouldn’t have mattered to her. All that really would have mattered was the fact that they would be together. Bella is quickly interrupted from her fanaticizing when the driver alerts her that they’ve reached the specified destination – Bella’s mothers’ house. She phones James as earlier instructed and leaves the house, not lingering to say goodbye to all her good memories in the house. It would remain forever tainted by her nemesis. The only way she makes her way to her old ballet studio is in a daze, for she trips on the concrete sidewalk a few times, her legs feeling like leaden blocks. Her will alone kept her going, knowing she would get to her mother sooner the quicker she could go. She makes it inside the studio to be encompassed by her mother’s panicky voice once more. The tape running in the VCR captures Bella’s attention. To her surprise an old recording of her and her mother is running. She realizes with dreadful terror that she has been tricked. But rather than become anger, she felt elated knowing that she was on the verge of a nervous breakdown. James, discovering this fact, finds Bella to be different and is even able to realize how the Cullens might have found her intriguing to study. Little did he know, she wasn’t an experiment to the Cullen family, they truly care for Bella.

James asks Bella if Edward is coming to avenge her. She tells him that she has asked Edward not to. They have different hopes; James, of course, hoping he comes to her rescue and Bella hoping he doesn’t. She doesn’t want him in danger. Bella begins to feel sick to her stomach, thinking the emotional rollercoaster she’s been on is finally catching up to her, for she feels that she’s on the verge of snapping. James tells Bella how he went about locating her with Victoria’s assistance. Bella is shocked to learn that because of James evil games of tracking that a vampire who obviously cared deeply for Alice changed her to protect her from being hunted by James. James killed the vampire in a vengeance, leaving Alice with no one. She knows that James is right about Edward hunting him down after he finds her lifeless with all the blood having been sucked from her as well as the tape he will find showing Alice’s history. This truly nauseates her. Knowing it will be totally useless Bella runs from him. He knocks her across the face, and she hits her head hard against the mirrors which shattered the glass. For a moment she was oblivious to the pain as she was in shock. This is when James stood over her and stepped onto her leg popping it into. She heard a piercing scream, finally realizing it was coming from her. She also finally felt the pain in her head, for a piece of glass left a huge gap in her head. She feels herself drifting away when she thinks she hears a feral growl.

My Thoughts - Possible "unspoken" contradiction in this section of the book: I wonder why Alice, with her being so attuned to Bella especially with all of the recent events that unfolded with James, didn't see that something bad was going to happen. Another reason.. she's also very much attuned to Jasper, especially with him being her lover and being the most recent to convert to their lifestyle choice.

You are doing a great job changing your writing from "focus on details" to "main ideas" of each chapter! Understanding this concept will lead to success in the Compass, but more importantly it supports your learning in future academics. Each class will require an extensive reading of text. Understanding and note taking main ideas will support you through courses. Some details will be important and you will be asked on test for those details. Determining which are important are the ones that support the main idea. This overall exercise I hope will prove to lead to your successes, which I believe will be many! -(Anne)

Dr. Martin Luther King is trying to get the government to stop spending so much money on wars and such. Then, the government would be able to provide help to the underclass and poor. I believe the same high dollar war spending is still in effect today.

(anne)

His is actually very surprised of her knowledge and especially that she’s still hanging around with Edward after knowing so much.

At once, Edward becomes very territorial over Bella and this intrigues James even more. This is the first time Bella has truly witnesses how menacingly dangerous Edward can be as a feral growl escapes from his chest. He sees this opportunity as a game of cat and mouse. Carlisle is able to calm the situation enough for the moment, convincing them to leave. Once it is safe Edward speedily drags Bella back to the jeep with Emmett and Alice on his heels. His immediate plans are to take Bella as far away from Forks as he can to get her safely away from James because he is a tracker. This means he want stop his game until he accomplishes what he set out for, that is to kill Bella. The Cullens know they will have to kill him to stop this dangerous game he’s playing.

Pages: 405 - 412

Bella really wants to become a vampire to be with Edward. She believes they are truly good or she wouldn’t be with Edward nor would she be so comfortable around his family.

My Thoughts - Possible "unspoken" contradiction in this section of the book:
I wonder why Alice, with her being so attuned to Bella especially with all of the recent events that unfolded with James, didn't see that something bad was going to happen.

-(Anne)
